Core Thesis (Julie Yoo, Bio + Health)
a16z sees healthcare as the industry that benefits most from AI — and they're investing accordingly. Two interconnected arguments:
1. Infrastructure is the prize. Healthcare infrastructure companies are worth $160B+ but built on legacy tech. Clinical interoperability — data exchange between payers and providers — is the #1 whitespace. AI enables upstarts to unseat incumbents.
2. Healthcare leapfrogs to AI. Low software adoption (3.5% IT spend vs. 7%+ in other industries) means no sunk cost bias. Healthcare goes straight from fax machines to AI. The opportunity isn't disrupting the software market (tens of billions) — it's disrupting the services market (trillions) by replacing human labor with "AI staff."
